Aids and adaptations

We want you to live independently in your home. Sometimes, due to a disability, it may be difficult for you or a member of your family to do this. We can often help you to overcome these difficulties by fitting equipment or by adapting your home. For example, you may need:

  • Grab rails or hand rails to help you get around more easily
  • Ramps or paths to help you get in and out of your home
  • Adaptations to make your home more wheelchair-friendly
  • Stair lifts
  • Help with bathing, for example a shower or a 'wet room'

How do I get help?

Before we carry out any work of this nature, we need a referral from the Occupational Therapy Service. You can contact them at:

  • Email: [email protected]
  • Telephone: 01227 598 500
  • Write to: Assessment and Enablement, Kent Adult Social Services, Brook House, John Wilson Business Park, Reeves Way, Whitstable, Kent, CT5 3SS

They will allocate you a case worker who will visit you and make recommendations for work to be carried out.

What happens next?

The Occupational Therapy Service will pass their recommendations to East Kent Housing's Asset Management team. Works such as grab rails or other minor alterations are normally done fairly quickly.

Larger works, such as stair lifts or wet rooms, will go on a waiting list. The Asset Management team will send you a questionnaire which asks you about your ability to get around your home. Once the team receives your completed questionnaire they will look at your circumstances and award priority to your application. They may be able to give you a rough idea of when your work will be carried out, but please remember that applications can come in all year round and sometimes emergency works come up which will take priority.

Sometimes, we may not be able to carry out the adaptation work that you need. This may be, for example, due to the age or construction of your home. If this is the case we will work with you to find another solution, which may include an offer of alternative accommodation which is better suited to your needs.
